Communications Electronic Warfare is a specialised business, involving the detection, interception, localisation and potentially the intentional jamming of enemy radio systems. Our EW
Training & Planning Tool, developed by us here at Abacus EW, is designed to provide EW Operators & it's Command Staff with a realistic EW simulated environment capable of simulating an EW operation anywhere in the world.
Sophistication
The Abacus EW Training & Planning Tool has been designed from the bottom up to be
extensible, easy to maintain and to make best use of modern available data
sources. The simple, intuitive operator interface belies the sophistication of
the software that provides the functionality.
At the core of the product is a
fully-featured secure database using the popular Postgres product. This
database offers security comparable with Oracle, and it offers access control
and row-level locking to ensure that it can work with many concurrent users.
The database structure includes SMADEF-XML compatibility that allows it to model
any kind of radio spectrum dependent system in sufficient detail to allow any
kind of simulation to be carried out. Additionally, clever software design
provides a highly flexible method of managing multiple versions of the tool to
be managed concurrently. Instead of being hardcoded, all dialog boxes, icons
and other controls in the software are stored in the database. This means that
when changes are made, usually they can be achieved by updating the database
rather than having to re-design the software itself.
The Abacus EW Training & Planning Tool has been designed as far as possible to be flexible,
efficient and future-proof.

A Unique Product - Future Proof
The modelling of communications links, coverage, ESM, direction finding and
jamming are all carried out using industry-standard methods, and presented in a
readily understood format for the operator. The structure of the system also
allows us to determine how much or how little data is provided to the operator
and how much is handled automatically by the system.
Our system is also capable of modelling scenarios and
dynamically changing situations, since the database is capable of modelling
time.
The flexible system design also means that the tool can be
upgraded to adopt new methods as they are developed in the future. This is
currently being done for the RCIED sub-system, reflecting cutting edge
developments in the EW operational world.
